Shorts Thumbnail Blurry or Cropped? How to Fix It

YouTube Shorts are vertical videos, but the public thumbnail files are the same wide images used for regular videos. A tall frame placed inside a wide file ends up small, surrounded by black bars, or cropped, which is why a Shorts thumbnail often looks wrong even when nothing is broken.

Why a Shorts thumbnail has black bars

The files YouTube serves for a video come in 16:9 (1280×720 and 320×180) and 4:3 (640×480 and 480×360). A vertical 9:16 frame has to fit inside one of those shapes, so it is centred with empty space on the sides. The 4:3 files also add bars above and below, so you may see a frame inside a frame.

Why it can also look soft

The largest file, 1280×720, only exists for some uploads. When it is missing you are left with a 640×480 or 480×360 image, and because the vertical frame occupies only the middle of that image, the useful part has even fewer pixels. Enlarging it makes it blurrier. The sizes and limits are listed in the guide to YouTube Shorts thumbnail size and aspect ratio.

If you are saving someone else's Short

  1. Paste the link of the Short into the YouTube Shorts thumbnail downloader.
  2. Choose the largest entry that is marked as available.
  3. If you need a vertical image, crop the centre of that file in any image editor.

If you are the creator

You can set a custom thumbnail for a Short in YouTube Studio on desktop. Use a vertical image that keeps the important part in the middle, since viewers may see it in different shapes depending on where it appears. The steps are in how to change a YouTube Shorts thumbnail.

Why this is not a problem with the downloader

Many people assume the tool cropped the picture, but the download is an exact copy of the file YouTube stores. If the file has black bars, the copy has them too; if the file is 480×360, the copy is 480×360. That is why ThumbGrab shows the real size of every file before you save it, so you can see in advance whether a sharper one exists for that Short.

Quick checklist

Frequently asked questions

Why does a Shorts thumbnail have black bars?

Shorts are vertical, but the image files YouTube publishes for videos are wide. A tall frame placed in a wide file leaves empty space on both sides, which appears as black bars or a small, centred picture.

Can I download a vertical thumbnail of a Short?

ThumbGrab downloads the image files YouTube publishes for the video, and those are wide formats. You can crop a vertical version from the largest file yourself.
